Google Assistant Has a Shutdown Date. Test Gemini Before September

Google Assistant finally has a date attached to its exit from many Android devices.

The Verge reported this week that Google will begin removing Assistant from Android phones, tablets and several paired mobile devices on September 4, 2026, as Gemini takes over. For UAE users, the good news is that Google’s current availability list includes the United Arab Emirates and Arabic is a supported Gemini mobile language.

But the useful move is not to wait for September and hope every old command behaves the same. Google’s own support pages still warn that some Assistant features are not available in all languages, countries or account types. Test the tasks you actually depend on while the fallback still exists.

The Important Part Is the Loss of the Fallback

Google has spent years making Gemini more capable. That is not the same thing as saying every Assistant habit has a one-for-one replacement.

The Verge says the removal process starts September 4 for Android phones and tablets, with paired mobile devices such as Wear OS watches, headphones and earbuds also moving toward Gemini. Google’s current support page says that when Gemini becomes your primary mobile assistant, it also replaces Assistant on paired mobile devices.

For now, Google’s Help Center still includes a menu path that lets users switch from Gemini back to Google Assistant on a phone or tablet. That page was live when Robius checked it on August 9. It should not be read as a promise that the fallback remains after the retirement rollout completes.

That mismatch is exactly why testing now is more useful than arguing about which assistant is smarter.

Gemini Is Available in the UAE, Including Arabic

Google’s current Gemini mobile availability list includes the United Arab Emirates. Its supported-language list includes Arabic as well as English and many other languages used across the country.

But support is not binary. Google says ‘Hey Google’ and some features previously available in Assistant are not available in all languages and countries or for supervised accounts. Work and school accounts also need access to Gemini Apps, and some work-profile situations have their own limitations.

That is why our earlier Arabic AI test for UAE users remains relevant. A model supporting Arabic does not automatically mean every voice action, local service or device integration behaves identically in Arabic and English.

Test the Boring Tasks First

Do not start your test with a clever research prompt. Start with the things an assistant is supposed to make boringly reliable.

Set an alarm. Start a timer. Call or message a contact. Ask for directions. Control the smart-home device you use most. Try the routine you run every morning. Use the account you normally use, not a spare personal account if your daily phone is managed by work.

Then repeat the important tasks in the language you actually speak to your phone. If your household switches between Arabic and English, test both.

Not Every Google Device Is Moving at the Same Speed

Another source of confusion is the word ‘Assistant.’ Google uses it across phones, speakers, displays, cars, headphones and more, but the migration is not one switch for every device.

Google’s current support documentation says Smart Displays, smart speakers, TVs, cars and locked Pixel Tablets can continue to be directly powered by Google Assistant even when Gemini becomes the primary assistant on your phone. The Verge’s report distinguishes Android Auto from vehicles with Google built-in. So check the exact device, not just the Google logo on it.

This is a transition architecture, not a single shutdown button. A household could temporarily have Gemini on a phone while an older Google device still responds through Assistant.

The Privacy Settings Change With the Assistant Too

Switching assistants also changes where activity settings live. Google’s support page says Gemini interactions can be saved to your Google Account when its activity setting is enabled, while existing Google Assistant data in Web & App Activity is not automatically deleted simply because you switch.

That is worth checking if you are moving a work phone, a family device or a shared Android tablet. A migration is a good moment to review what is being saved rather than accepting every old setting by inertia.

The end of Google Assistant on phones is not mainly an AI benchmark story. It is a product-transition story.

The feature that matters most is the one you discover is missing only after the fallback disappears. UAE users are in a better position than many markets because Gemini is officially listed as available and Arabic is supported. That still does not guarantee identical behavior across every device, language and account.

So use August as the test window. Let Gemini run your ordinary day before September decides it for you.
