That advice is practical because AI privacy now has two doors: the information you choose to submit, and the information your phone lets the app reach in the background.

The Permission Is the Capability

The UAE Cybersecurity Council’s warning focuses on a simple mistake: finding an AI tool through search does not make that tool trustworthy, and tapping Allow can expose more than the text you deliberately type into a prompt.

A camera permission lets an app use the camera. A microphone permission can let it record audio. Location can reveal where the device is. Photos, contacts and files can expose completely different categories of information.

A Permission Does Not Tell You the Data Policy

Phone permissions answer one question: what can the app reach on the device? They do not answer what the company stores after access is granted, how long it keeps data, whether humans can review it, which processors receive it or how deletion works.

That means a safe permission decision has two layers. First, decide whether the feature genuinely needs the access. Then check the provider’s privacy terms for what happens after the data leaves the device.

The distinction becomes more important as AI agents gain permission to cross between tools and systems. More capability should mean more deliberate access control, not a reflexive tap on Allow.

Android Already Gives You Granular Controls

Google’s Android guidance says users can review permissions app by app or through Permission manager. For camera, microphone and location, available choices can include allowing access only while using the app, asking every time or not allowing it at all. Location can also have an all-the-time option.

The practical rule is simple. If an AI image tool needs your photos, that does not automatically mean it needs continuous location access. If a voice feature needs the microphone while you use it, that does not automatically justify unrelated permissions.

Android also lets users disable camera or microphone access more broadly through privacy controls. Exact menu names can vary by device and Android version.

iPhone Gives You the Same Basic Review

Apple says apps must request permission before using the camera or microphone, and users can review access under Settings, Privacy & Security. Location, photos, contacts and other data categories can also be managed there.

Apple’s App Privacy Report can provide another useful layer by showing how apps use granted permissions and their network activity. That can help identify an app that has broader access than you remember granting.

The important point is reversibility. Granting a permission once does not mean you have to leave it enabled forever.

Search Results Are Not a Trust Badge

Khaleej Times reported that the Council specifically warned users to verify AI services found through online searches because not every platform is safe or trustworthy. Gulf News reported the Council’s warning that the bigger privacy risk may be the data and device functions an AI tool is allowed to access.

That is especially relevant for copycat AI tools, thin wrappers around popular models and unfamiliar services advertised as free. A polished interface does not tell you who operates the service or how data is handled.

The broader UAE cybersecurity lesson is the same one raised by the warning about a single virus hitting critical services: access becomes risk when it is broader than the system actually needs.

The Two-Minute Permission Audit

Open the privacy or permission settings on your phone and start with camera, microphone, location, photos and files. Look for AI apps you rarely use, permissions set to all the time and apps whose access does not match their main function.

Remove what looks unnecessary. If a feature stops working, you can decide whether to restore the specific permission when you need it. That is safer than leaving every door open because an app requested access once.

Then check the provider itself. Know who operates the service, read the privacy terms for sensitive use and avoid uploading information that would create a problem if it were retained or exposed.
