Scam pattern verified against two reports of an Abu Dhabi Police warning dated July 27, 2026. Checked on August 1, 2026.
The message arrives when your bank balance has just moved. A villa is suddenly available below market price. A visa agent can finish the process today. A seized vehicle is being sold cheaply. A job, insurance policy, watch, ticket, or investment is offered at a price that disappears if you wait.
Abu Dhabi Police warned on July 27 that online fraud is rising around the salary payment period. The authority listed fake property advertisements, bogus visa services, fraudulent jobs, unauthorized insurance, false vehicle sales, fake government websites, remote-access apps, and deposits for goods or services that do not exist.
The products change. The decision being forced is the same: pay now, verify later. That order must be reversed.
| T H E R O B I U S V E R D I C T SCAM: A salary-period offer that demands a deposit, OTP, bank login, remote-access app or payment through a sent link is a confirmed fraud pattern. Do not continue inside the message. Find the seller, company, bank or government service independently through its official app, website or registered contact details. A convincing logo, urgent deadline and realistic-looking payment page do not establish legitimacy. |
What Police Warned About
Abu Dhabi Police said fraudsters are using the salary payment period to target residents with deceptive advertisements and websites. The warning covered fake villas, chalets, property listings, residency and visa services, jobs, labor supply offers, insurance products, and vehicles supposedly seized by Abu Dhabi Customs.
Police also identified fake vehicle-number-plate and luxury-watch sales, investment offers, counterfeit event tickets, websites impersonating government agencies or familiar organizations, and requests for deposits for goods, training, certificates, or services that are not real.
The list matters because salary-day fraud is not one website or one brand. It is a timing strategy applied across products people already search for. The scammer only needs one offer to match something the victim currently wants.
Why the Salary Timing Works
The police warning connects the fraud surge to the period when salaries are paid. Robius’s practical inference is straightforward: a person with fresh funds can act faster, make a larger deposit, and feel more able to absorb what looks like a small booking or processing charge.
Urgency does the rest. The property has another interested tenant. The visa slot closes today. The seized car is available to the first buyer. The investment window is about to end. Each story is designed to make independent verification feel like the thing that will cause you to miss out.
The fake domestic-worker pattern works the same way. Our report on agencies asking families for a deposit before producing a real candidate showed how stolen photos and professional documents can support a service that does not exist.
The Deposit Is Often the First Test
A small deposit is not harmless simply because the amount is manageable. It tests whether the victim will follow instructions, confirms that the payment method works, and creates psychological pressure to keep paying because money has already been sent.
After the first transfer, a scammer can introduce a refundable security charge, processing fee, insurance payment, customs release, certificate cost, or account activation. The stated reason changes while the destination remains controlled by the fraudster.
This is also the structure behind many fake UAE visa and job accounts. A payment is framed as normal administration, even though legitimate recruitment should not begin with an employee sending money to an unknown person through WhatsApp.
Use the Outside-the-Message Rule
Never verify an offer using the telephone number, link, QR code, account, review page, or document supplied by the person asking for payment. Those materials form one controlled environment. A fraudster can make every part confirm every other part.
Leave the conversation and search for the entity independently. Open the government app yourself. Type the known official domain. Call a number from a regulator or established business directory. For property, confirm the broker and listing through the relevant official system. For employment or visa services, verify the licensed office rather than the logo on a PDF.
The fake traffic-fine message is defeated by the same habit. Do not argue with the message or inspect its payment page. Open the official police or transport app and check the account there.
| The Bait | Safe Check Before Paying |
|---|---|
| Property or chalet deposit | Verify the broker, ownership or management company independently and inspect the property or authenticated listing. |
| Visa or residency service | Use the official ICP, GDRFA or licensed typing-center channel appropriate to the service. |
| Job or labor supply offer | Confirm the employer and licensed recruiter. Never pay to receive a job. |
| Customs-seized vehicle or number plate | Check the relevant authority’s official auction or service channel. Do not trust a social-media seller. |
| Insurance offer | Confirm the insurer and intermediary through official contact details and the relevant regulator. |
| Investment promise | Verify the exact legal entity and license category on the correct public register before funding. |
The Remote-Access Request Ends the Conversation
Police warned about attempts to make victims install remote-access software. These tools are legitimate when used by a known IT team, but they become dangerous when a stranger guides you to install one during a bank, government, delivery, or payment conversation.
Remote access can expose what is displayed on the device and may allow control over actions, depending on the software and permissions. No bank, police officer, visa official, seller, or insurer needs remote control of your phone to receive a normal payment or verify your identity.
The same rule applies to one-time passwords. An OTP authorizes something. Anyone asking you to read it aloud or send a screenshot is trying to use your authorization rather than complete their own legitimate process.
If You Already Clicked or Paid
Stop communicating through the suspicious channel. Contact your bank immediately using the number on the card or inside the official app. Explain whether you entered card details, shared an OTP, installed software, approved a transfer, or disclosed login information.
Remove remote-access software, change affected passwords from a clean device, review linked cards and sessions, and save the messages, numbers, URLs, receipts, account names, and screenshots. Evidence can disappear once the scammer knows the victim is reporting.
Abu Dhabi Police directs suspected fraud reports to Aman on 8002626, by SMS to 2828, or by email to [email protected]. Be careful when searching for reporting help: Robius has also documented fake consumer-protection sites targeting people trying to report fraud.
The One-Minute Salary-Day Pause
On salary day, create a simple personal rule: no new deposit, investment, booking, or account payment goes out from a message on the same day it arrives. This is not a police requirement. It is a practical buffer that removes the urgency the scam needs.
Residents who recently arrived are particularly exposed because they are still learning which UAE apps, authorities, and service providers are real. The Robius first-30-days scam guide collects the official channels worth saving before an urgent message arrives.
The Bottom Line
The police warning is not saying every online discount during salary week is fraudulent. It is saying fraudsters deliberately use the period and a wide range of believable services to reach people when money is available.
The decisive warning sign is not bad spelling or an unfamiliar logo. It is a request to trust the route the seller supplied. Verify outside the message, refuse remote access and OTP requests, and never let a same-day deadline decide where your salary goes.
