Reuters reported on August 15 that Nvidia is in talks to invest as much as $3 billion in SB Energy, the SoftBank subsidiary developing a major Ohio data-center project for OpenAI.

The reported discussions are not a completed transaction. Reuters said it could not independently verify The Information’s report, and Nvidia and SB Energy had not commented. But the financing structure matters anyway because it points to a bigger shift: chip suppliers, cloud tenants, developers, banks and investors are becoming financially tied to the same AI demand assumptions.

Reuters says Nvidia is in talks to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, which is developing a large Ohio data center for OpenAI. The report also points to broader discussions around credit support. Separate reporting has described Nvidia reducing an earlier contemplated guarantee amount. Those are negotiations, not final obligations.

Why the UAE Should Pay Attention

The UAE is already building at the same scale where these financing questions become unavoidable. OpenAI says Stargate UAE is a 1-gigawatt cluster in Abu Dhabi, with a first 200-megawatt phase expected in 2026 and partners including G42, Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco and SoftBank.

Do Not Copy the Ohio Structure Onto Abu Dhabi

If AI demand keeps accelerating, financing support can look brilliant. It helps developers build faster and gives chip suppliers a bigger market. But the structure can also create circular exposure: the company selling the hardware helps finance the customer or the infrastructure that buys the hardware.

That does not make the deal bad. It changes the diligence question. Investors need to know how much demand is independent, how much is enabled by supplier financing and who absorbs the loss if utilization, model economics or hardware life cycles disappoint.

The next phase of AI infrastructure will not be won only by the company with the best GPU or the largest model. It will be won by the networks that can secure power, permits, customers and capital at the same time.

That is why the financing documents around an AI campus deserve almost as much attention as the server specifications. Compute is becoming infrastructure. Infrastructure comes with debt, guarantees, covenants and counterparties. Those are now AI stories too.
