Your next customer may never type your brand name into Google. They may ask an AI assistant for a lightweight stroller under a budget, a gift that arrives in Dubai tomorrow, or a moisturiser for a specific skin type and let the assistant build the shortlist.

Retailers are already adjusting. Reuters reported on August 7 that companies including Walmart, Ulta Beauty and Wayfair are working to improve how their products appear in AI shopping results. OpenAI’s own shopping documentation says ChatGPT can show product options with images, details and links, and Shopify product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog.

The Robius Action Brief
Important
Why it matters

AI assistants are becoming another discovery surface, so incomplete product data can make a good UAE store harder to recommend.

Who should care

UAE ecommerce owners, Shopify merchants, marketplaces, retail marketers and agencies managing product feeds.

Opportunities

Better product data can improve discovery across search, marketplaces and AI assistants at the same time.

Risks or limitations

AI shopping features, ranking logic and checkout availability are changing quickly and can differ by market and merchant.

What happens next

Retailers and AI platforms will keep testing deeper catalog feeds, recommendations and checkout integrations.

What you can do

Audit your 20 best-selling products and make every key attribute clear before paying for an AI-commerce add-on.

Who benefits

Merchants with accurate, structured and current product information across their storefront and feeds.

Who can participate

Any ecommerce business can improve product titles, descriptions, availability, pricing and structured catalog data before buying new software.

What readers should monitor

Watch referral traffic from AI tools, product-feed errors, price freshness, inventory accuracy and whether AI-referred visitors convert.

For a UAE SME, the important part is not whether to invent a new acronym for AI search. It is whether your product data is good enough for a machine to understand what you sell.

AI Shopping Is Becoming a Discovery Channel

Reuters reported that shoppers are increasingly using ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini for product recommendations, pushing major retailers to rethink how their websites describe products. The basic behavior is different from a classic keyword search. A shopper can describe a need, constraints and preferences in one sentence and ask the assistant to narrow the field.

That makes product attributes more important. A page that says only “premium everyday bag” gives a machine less to work with than one that clearly states dimensions, material, weight, color, delivery terms, warranty and what fits inside.

The shift fits the direction we covered when Visa and OpenAI pushed AI shopping forward. Payment is one layer. Discovery is the layer that decides whether your product gets considered at all.

OpenAI Is Already Reading Merchant Catalogs

OpenAI says product results in ChatGPT are selected independently and are not ads. Its help page says merchants are ranked using factors such as availability, price, quality and whether a seller is the maker or primary seller. That does not give merchants a guaranteed formula. It does tell them that current catalog data matters.

There is one particularly useful detail for UAE businesses using Shopify. OpenAI says Shopify product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required from individual merchants for that integration. Merchants can also apply to provide direct product feeds if they want OpenAI to receive more up-to-date information.

That does not mean every Shopify store will suddenly appear for every question. It means the infrastructure is moving closer to the catalog itself. If your catalog is messy, the AI layer has no reason to clean it for you.

This is another reason platform choice should not be reduced to a feature list. Our Shopify versus Salla guide for UAE stores focused on where customers are, how you get paid and how the business operates. AI discovery now becomes one more distribution question on top of that.

Do Not Build Around In-Chat Checkout Yet

There is an awkward detail in the current public record. Reuters reported on August 7 that OpenAI ended its Instant Checkout tool in March and is now focused on product discovery and merchant-owned checkout. OpenAI’s Help Center, updated recently, still says some eligible products and merchants may show an Instant Checkout option inside ChatGPT.

Those two descriptions are not perfectly aligned. Robius is not going to smooth that over. For a UAE merchant, the safe operating assumption is that AI is a discovery and referral channel first. Do not redesign your checkout economics around an in-chat purchase flow unless the feature is live for your exact store, market and account.

That approach also protects something retailers care about: the customer relationship. Reuters reported that retailers prefer shoppers to complete purchases on their own sites because that is where loyalty, service history and first-party customer data live.

The Product-Data Audit That Matters

Start with titles. A product title should tell a person and a machine what the item actually is. Avoid filling it with slogans before the core product name and variant.

Then check attributes. Size, material, compatibility, capacity, ingredients, color, delivery geography, warranty, return conditions and stock status should be explicit where relevant. If an attribute matters to the buying decision, do not hide it only inside an image.

Check price consistency next. If your product feed says AED 199 but the landing page says AED 249, you have created a trust problem before the customer arrives. The same applies to out-of-stock variants, shipping promises and bundle contents.

Finally, write descriptions around real questions. What is it for? Who is it not for? What is included? What does it work with? What is the delivery window in the UAE? This is useful to humans even if no AI assistant ever reads it.

That is why the first move is not another subscription from a list of AI tools for UAE small businesses. Fix the data feeding the tools you already use.

Measure AI Traffic Before You Celebrate It

A referral is not a sale. Add AI referral sources to your analytics reports and compare them with search, paid social, marketplaces and direct traffic. Watch conversion rate, average order value, returns and customer-acquisition cost where attribution is available.

Do not overreact to a small spike. AI referrals are still evolving and the platforms can change how links are surfaced. A channel that looks brilliant for one month can shift after a ranking or interface update.

But do not ignore it either. The useful advantage for a small UAE merchant is that catalog hygiene is not wasted work. Cleaner product data also improves marketplace listings, internal search, shopping feeds, support answers and staff handoffs. It belongs with the boring-but-valuable stack we highlighted in our UAE SME tech tools guide.

The Robius Read

AI shopping is easy to frame as a battle between ChatGPT and Google. For a small retailer, that is too far upstream. Your job is not to predict which assistant wins. Your job is to make your products legible wherever customers ask for them.

The new storefront is partly your website and partly the structured information leaving it. That means product data is no longer back-office housekeeping. It is distribution infrastructure.

Before you spend on an “AI commerce” package, open your best-selling product page and ask a simple question: could a stranger understand exactly what this is, who it suits, what it costs and whether it can reach them in the UAE today? If not, start there.
