AI coding agents can now build a surprisingly useful internal tool from a paragraph of instructions. That is real. It is also how a small business can accidentally convince itself that Salesforce, Jira, its payroll system, or its accounting platform is just an expensive collection of screens it could rebuild over a weekend.

Reuters Breakingviews argues that the fear of AI wiping out enterprise software is probably overstated. The strongest evidence is not a vendor promise. Large companies still need software that scales, protects data, manages permissions, survives audits, and stays maintainable after the employee who prompted version one has moved on.

The Robius Action Brief
Useful
Why it matters

AI coding makes custom software dramatically easier to start, but the maintenance, security, compliance, and integration burden still grows with business criticality.

Who should care

UAE SME owners, operations teams, developers, agencies, finance leaders, and founders tempted to replace paid SaaS with AI-generated internal tools.

Opportunities

Build lightweight dashboards, approval flows, report generators, data-entry utilities, and glue between existing systems at far lower initial cost than traditional custom development.

Risks or limitations

AI-generated code can contain vulnerabilities, become difficult to maintain, and quietly recreate features that mature SaaS vendors already handle better.

What happens next

SaaS vendors will keep embedding AI while customers use coding agents to fill gaps around them, creating more hybrid software stacks rather than immediate mass replacement.

What you can do

Use a build-or-buy gate: prototype low-risk internal tools with AI, but require security, ownership, backup, and migration plans before a prototype becomes critical infrastructure.

Who benefits

Teams with narrow internal workflow gaps that are too specific for an off-the-shelf tool but not critical enough to justify a full software project.

Who can participate

Non-developers can prototype with AI coding tools, but production systems handling sensitive data or money still require competent technical ownership and review.

What readers should monitor

Maintenance hours, security findings, failed integrations, user growth, support burden, and whether the custom tool is becoming a system of record without anyone admitting it.

For UAE SMEs, the opportunity is excellent if the boundary is clear. Build the small, awkward internal tool that nobody sells well. Be much more careful before replacing the boring system that already handles money, identity, tax, payroll, customer records, or years of business history.

What Vibe Coding Changed

The barrier to making software has fallen. A founder can describe a workflow in normal language, let an AI coding agent create the database, interface, and logic, then iterate without starting from a blank code editor.

That is powerful for internal software because many SME pain points are small and weird. A custom commission calculator, a supplier approval form, a dashboard that combines two exports, or a lead-routing tool may never justify a conventional development project. AI can make those jobs economically sensible.

The mistake is extrapolating from a successful small app to the conclusion that every subscription is now replaceable.

Why SaaS Is More Than the Screen

A CRM is not only a list of customers. Payroll is not only a salary table. Accounting software is not only an invoice generator. Mature systems carry permission models, backups, audit logs, integrations, recovery processes, mobile support, reporting, data exports, security updates, and thousands of edge cases discovered over years.

When you replace a subscription with custom code, those responsibilities do not disappear. They move onto your company.

That can still be the right trade if the software is strategically important or unusually specific. It is a terrible trade when the owner thought the job ended once the first version worked on a laptop.

The Security Agency Says Use a Spectrum

The UK National Cyber Security Centre does not say businesses should stop using vibe coding. Its guidance is more useful than that. It recommends matching the amount of human oversight to the risk of what is being built.

A prototype, demo, or low-risk internal tool can sit closer to full AI-generated development. Authentication logic, sensitive personal data, credentials, or safety-critical software should move toward stronger human review, testing, and architectural control.

That is the right default for UAE SMEs too. The risk is not that AI touched the code. The risk is letting low-review development leak into a high-consequence system.

The Market Data Says Companies Are Still Buying

Reuters Breakingviews cited Boston Consulting Group survey data showing only 10% of corporate AI budgets are used to build tools entirely in-house, while 78% go to third-party companies helping businesses adopt AI. That does not prove SaaS is safe forever, but it does challenge the idea that companies are rushing to rebuild everything themselves.

Atlassian has also reported that Jira customers using AI code-generation tools create more work in Jira, have higher monthly activity, and expand seats faster than customers that do not use those tools. The company has an obvious commercial interest in that finding, so treat it as company-reported evidence, not a universal law.

The pattern is still intuitive. More software creation can produce more need for systems that coordinate, secure, document, and govern the work.

What a UAE SME Should Actually Build

Good AI-built candidates are narrow, internal, easy to test, and reversible. Think a dashboard that reads from existing systems, a form that writes to one approved database, a reporting tool, a simple approval workflow, or a script that removes repetitive copy-and-paste work.

Our 7 AI tools for UAE small business guide is useful here because it starts from the opposite direction: buy mature tools where the category is already solved, then use AI around them to remove friction.

The same economics sit behind The Best AI Model May Be the Wrong Business Choice. The smartest technical option is not automatically the best business option. Total cost includes maintenance, error handling, migration, and staff time.

What You Should Be Very Slow to Rebuild

Be cautious around payroll, accounting, tax, HR records, core CRM history, authentication, payment processing, customer identity, and any system whose failure stops the company from operating or creates a regulatory problem.

Those systems can absolutely be customized or replaced. The bar should simply be much higher. Who owns the code? Who reviews security? How are backups tested? What happens if the AI tool or developer disappears? How will you migrate five years of records? Who is on call when the month-end process breaks?

If nobody can answer those questions, you are not replacing SaaS. You are replacing a vendor with an undocumented dependency.

The Cost Trap Works Both Ways

SaaS can become expensive as seat counts and add-ons grow. Custom software can become expensive through invisible labour. The cheapest version-one build can create the most expensive year-two maintenance problem.

We saw a similar budgeting mistake in Uber burned its AI budget. Low unit costs feel harmless until automation scales consumption. Custom code has the same dynamic. Every integration, new user, permission request, bug, and compliance change adds a small operating cost that can compound.

That is why the right comparison is not monthly licence fee versus zero. It is licence fee versus the full cost of owning the software lifecycle.

The Build-or-Buy Gate We Would Use

Build when the workflow is genuinely unique, the scope is narrow, the data risk is manageable, and somebody technical will own it. Buy when the category is mature, the process is regulated or business-critical, integrations matter, and switching later would be painful.

Then allow a middle option. Keep the system of record and build a custom layer around it. An AI-generated dashboard can read CRM data without replacing the CRM. A small approval app can trigger work in the accounting platform without becoming the accounting platform.

That hybrid model is probably where most UAE SMEs get the best return from vibe coding today.

The Robius Layer: Build the Weird Thing, Buy the Boring Thing

AI coding is most valuable where software vendors have no incentive to solve your exact little problem. That is where a three-hour prototype can erase a weekly annoyance and create obvious ROI.

Mature SaaS earns its price in the parts nobody celebrates: backups, permissions, audit trails, compatibility, support, updates, and institutional memory. Rebuilding those functions can make sense, but the business case has to include them.

So use the new superpower. Build the weird thing. Be suspicious of rebuilding the boring big thing until you can prove you are ready to own everything behind the screen.
