Open the Cypher app today and one part of the old service is already over. Card spending ended on August 7, all active Cypher Cards were scheduled to be canceled, and users can no longer treat the card as a working payment product.
The rest of the shutdown has one important date: September 6, 2026. Cypher says users have until then to withdraw remaining balances, claim rewards, download transaction records and back up wallet access before the current mobile app, dApp and business platform go offline. The UAE matters here because Cypher’s own support page listed the United Arab Emirates as a supported country for card issuance earlier this year.
Cypher Card spending has ended, but users still have a limited window to remove balances and preserve access and records before the old platform closes.
UAE residents and businesses that used a Cypher Card, wallet, rewards program or the current Cypher platform.
The acquisition by Nium may lead to a new Cypher product later, but the current platform is still being shut down.
Waiting until the deadline can create avoidable access, withdrawal or recordkeeping problems if support queues or account issues arise.
The current Cypher app, dApp and business platform are scheduled to go offline on September 6, when withdrawals and rewards claims also close.
Withdraw remaining funds, claim rewards, download records, back up wallet recovery information and stop sending funds to Cypher deposit addresses.
Users who complete offboarding early reduce the risk of leaving money, records or recovery information inside a service that is being retired.
Existing Cypher users can follow the company’s wind-down steps; new card issuance and loading have already ended.
Watch Cypher and Nium for official updates on the replacement product, but do not leave funds in the old platform while waiting.
This is not a mystery disappearance. Nium announced on July 8 that it had acquired Cypher, and Cypher published a formal termination notice and wind-down timeline. The consumer-protection issue is therefore not whether the shutdown is real. It is whether users act before the remaining access window closes.
The Timeline Is Already Running
The wind-down began on July 8, when Cypher disabled card loading and stopped new card applications and issuance. The final rewards cycle followed in July. August 7 was the last day for purchases, after which active cards were to be canceled. September 6 is the final shutdown date for the current app, dApp, business platform, withdrawal window and rewards claims.
Cypher also says the CYPR protocol is being permanently wound down as part of the transition. That matters for users who were focused on the card and forgot there may be rewards or protocol-related items attached to the same account. The company’s own checklist says to finish every offboarding step rather than only withdrawing a card balance.
Nium’s acquisition announcement describes Cypher as a crypto-native non-custodial wallet and issuing company and says the team is joining Nium to build future fiat-to-on-chain payment infrastructure. Cypher separately says it is working on a next version of the product on Nium’s infrastructure. That future product does not extend the deadline for the old one.
Why UAE Users Should Check Their Accounts
Cypher’s country-support page, updated in February 2026, included the United Arab Emirates in its supported list for card issuance. So this is not a shutdown with only theoretical UAE relevance. Residents here could have been cardholders and can still be holding a wallet, account records, rewards or residual balance from the current platform.
The broader UAE crypto environment is becoming more regulated and easier to access through local rails, something we covered in our analysis of regulated dirham-to-crypto access. That makes it even more important to distinguish between the crypto asset itself, the wallet, the card program and the legal entity providing each service. One brand can sit across several different layers.
Cypher’s current posted terms say the platform agreement is with CypherD Wallet Inc. Its card terms separately identify an issuer for the card program. If you need to dispute an old transaction or prove what agreement applied to your account, save the terms and statements connected to your own account rather than relying on a product page that may disappear after shutdown.
Do These Five Things Before September 6
- Withdraw any remaining card or platform balance. Cypher says withdrawals are available without fees during the wind-down period.
- Claim any eligible rewards before the claim window closes.
- Download your transaction history and keep it with your personal or business financial records.
- Back up the recovery phrase or private keys for the non-custodial wallet, and verify that the backup actually works before the app disappears.
- Do not send new funds to Cypher deposit addresses while the platform is winding down.
The sequence matters. Download records before you close or empty anything that might make them harder to find. Verify your wallet recovery information before deleting an app. Withdraw early enough to contact support if a transfer fails or an account detail needs correction. A shutdown deadline is the worst time to discover that the email address or phone number on the account is outdated.
This is the same operational lesson behind our digital-life exit checklist for people leaving the UAE: access usually breaks in an order people do not expect. Records, recovery methods and authentication should be handled before the system you rely on disappears.
Do Not Turn the Acquisition Into a Safety Claim
Nium is a major payments infrastructure company and the acquisition is publicly confirmed by both sides. That tells us the corporate transaction is real. It does not mean users should leave money behind because a larger company now owns the team. Cypher itself is telling users to withdraw from the current platform.
The same discipline applies in the other direction. A crypto product shutting down is not automatically a scam. Businesses close products, sell companies and change infrastructure. The consumer-protection test is whether the wind-down is disclosed, whether users are given a clear path to their funds and records, and whether the dates and responsibilities are stated plainly.
That is different from the patterns we document in crypto airdrop scams or fake trading schemes such as Bitcoin Loophole, where the problem is fabricated value, unverifiable operators or a withdrawal trap. Cypher is publishing a wind-down and telling users to take funds out.
What About the New Cypher?
Both Cypher and Nium say the acquisition is intended to support future products that combine crypto-native experience with Nium’s payments infrastructure. Cypher says existing users can opt in for updates about the next version. That may become interesting later. It is not a reason to treat the old account as a bridge into the new product unless the companies explicitly say so.
The safest assumption is that the current platform is ending exactly as announced. Finish the exit. Preserve the records you need. Then evaluate any future Cypher product as a new service with new terms, new entities and new protections.
The Bottom Line
Cypher Card spending is already over. September 6 is the date that matters for everything left behind. According to Cypher, that is when the current platform goes offline and the remaining withdrawal and rewards-claim windows close.
If you used Cypher in the UAE, do not wait for the final weekend. The best outcome from a platform shutdown is boring: your balance is out, your records are saved, your wallet recovery works, and the deadline passes without you needing support at all.
