OGold says it has crossed 1.5 million users. The Dubai app lets people buy fractions of gold and silver from AED 1, sell holdings, request physical metal, use metal value for purchases, and place gold into an optional feature advertised as earning up to 5% annually.
That sounds simpler than a traditional gold purchase, and the basic product is real. The legal terms identify OGOLD PRECIOUS METALS TRADING LLC as the UAE company operating the app, and the app is available through both major mobile stores.
The useful review begins after the download. No direct commission does not mean no cost. “Fully insured” does not mean risk-free. Physical redemption has minimums and fees. And the Earn feature is not a bank savings account.
| T H E R O B I U S V E R D I C T CAUTION: A real precious-metals app with a clear ownership structure, but the marketing is smoother than the risk allocation in the terms. The app can suit UAE users who want small, convenient gold purchases and understand the buy-sell spread. Do not treat the balance like a bank deposit, assume every fraction can be delivered physically, or place metal into Earn without reading the custody, withdrawal and loss provisions. |
What OGold Actually Is
OGold is operated by OGOLD PRECIOUS METALS TRADING LLC. Its June 30, 2026 terms list an address in Gold & Diamond Park 2 in Al Quoz, Dubai. The service has expanded beyond buying and selling metal into cards, vouchers, gift cards, eSIMs, rewards, marketplaces, gifting, and an optional Earn feature.
The company describes itself as regulated by the Dubai Economic Department for precious-metal trading and registered as a designated non-financial business and profession. Those are relevant claims for a gold trader, but they should not be confused with a bank license, deposit protection, or the regulatory structure of an investment fund.
This is the same distinction Robius makes in the five-minute UAE license check. A real trade license answers whether a company exists and may conduct a stated activity. It does not automatically tell you which protection applies to every financial-looking feature inside the app.
What You Own After Tapping Buy
OGold says title to purchased metal passes to the customer after the transaction is confirmed and the holding is recorded in the app through its internal allocation ledger. Physical backing is maintained through liquidity and custody partners, and the metal remains in a storage or custody arrangement until it is sold or redeemed.
That is more concrete than an app balance with no stated underlying asset. But the customer still depends on OGOLD records, partner infrastructure, reconciliation, liquidity, storage, and operational systems. The terms say instant execution and settlement are not guaranteed in every circumstance.
Users choosing between a gold app and a conventional investment platform should compare structures, not only interfaces. Our UAE investment app comparison shows how investor protection changes when an account is held by a regulated broker or investment manager rather than a precious-metals merchant.
No Commission Still Has a Cost
OGold says it does not charge a direct buying commission. Its help center explains that the cost is built into the spread between the buy and sell prices. That is common in precious-metals trading, but it means a user begins with a gap to recover before a sale becomes profitable.
The correct comparison is not the app price against yesterday’s headline gold price. Check the buy price and the immediate sell price at the same moment. Then check any bank withdrawal charge, storage fee, card conversion, delivery fee, or making charge that applies to the route you expect to use.
The terms say transaction records may show the metal price and a storage fee separately. Physical products can carry making, delivery, collection, and fulfillment charges. The final cost is therefore feature-specific, and a zero-commission banner cannot summarize it.
The Insurance Headline Needs Its Fine Print
OGold’s public pages say all holdings are insured and identify Dubai National Insurance and other partners. That is reassuring as far as it goes. The legal terms add the part a buyer needs before relying on the headline.
The terms state that customer-owned metal held through storage or custody remains at the customer’s risk. They say OGOLD does not act as the insurer or guarantor and does not guarantee full recovery in every circumstance. Listed risks include third-party failure, vault events, force majeure, sanctions, regulatory action, and insurance limitations or exclusions.
Those statements do not necessarily mean there is no insurance. Insurance normally has limits and exclusions. They do mean a reader should ask for the current policy certificate, insured parties, coverage limits, exclusions, vault arrangements, and claims process rather than treating “fully insured” as the end of the diligence.
Physical Redemption Is Not the Same as Holding a Bar
The app offers physical redemption, delivery, or collection, but not every fractional balance qualifies. The terms say minimum thresholds, product availability, catalogue availability, operational procedures, and fees apply. Holdings below the applicable threshold may only be sold or otherwise managed through the app.
Delivery timelines are described as indicative. Product shortages, fabrication, logistics, compliance checks, and operational conditions can delay fulfillment. A completed metal trade remains final even when the physical delivery takes longer than expected, unless applicable law requires another outcome.
This is one reason a digital gold balance should not be described as identical to a bar already in your hand. The app offers a claim recorded through its ledger and a route to eligible physical products. That route has conditions.
Earn Up to 5% Is the Highest-Risk Feature
OGold markets an optional feature that lets users allocate metal and earn up to 5% annually. The terms say participation is voluntary, returns are variable, and no fixed return or capital protection is guaranteed. They also say performance depends on Shariah-permissible deployment activities.
Metal allocated to Earn must be withdrawn from that feature before physical redemption can be requested. The terms also refer to possible loss, delay, or reduction in value and make clear that OGOLD does not owe the user a fiduciary duty.
That makes Earn materially different from simply purchasing allocated gold and leaving it in custody. Treat it as an additional risk decision, not as a free bonus attached to the same asset. The Robius “Legit, But” framework exists for exactly this kind of gap between legal availability and the protection a user may assume.
What the App Stores Add
The app is listed on Google Play and Apple’s UAE App Store. Store availability confirms distribution through established platforms, not the financial protection of the underlying product. Google Play shows thousands of reviews, with both positive experiences and complaints involving spreads, withdrawal costs, and exchange-rate outcomes.
Individual reviews are not proof of a systemic problem, and Robius did not reproduce a user complaint as fact. They are useful prompts for what to test with a small amount: the same-day buy-sell gap, withdrawal route, support response, settlement time, and the exact amount received after every charge.
A user who mainly wants everyday payments may also compare the product with a conventional wallet. Our UAE wallet guide and digital-bank comparison cover products where the core balance is fiat money rather than metal whose value changes before it is spent.
| Before You Fund | What to Verify |
|---|---|
| Buy and sell quote | Record both prices at the same time and calculate the spread. |
| Custody | Ask which vault and custodian hold the metal and how ownership is reconciled. |
| Insurance | Read the current certificate, limits, exclusions and claims route. |
| Physical redemption | Check the minimum weight, making charge, delivery fee and expected timeline. |
| Earn | Read the variable-return, withdrawal, deployment and loss provisions separately. |
| Withdrawal | Test the bank or card route with a small amount before building a large balance. |
Who It Suits
OGold can suit a UAE user who wants to purchase small amounts of gold regularly, accepts an app-based custody structure, and values the ability to sell or use metal value without visiting a dealer. Start small and confirm the full exit route before treating it as a long-term holding platform.
It is a weaker fit for someone who wants a protected cash balance, immediate possession of a specific bar, a guaranteed return, or a regulated investment account with the same complaint and compensation structure as a bank or securities firm.
The Bottom Line
The 1.5 million-user milestone is a company-reported adoption figure, not a substitute for product due diligence. The stronger parts of OGold are the named legal entity, stated metal ownership, app-store presence, and explicit route to eligible physical redemption.
The caution sits in the gap between the front page and the legal terms. Spread, custody, insurance exclusions, redemption thresholds, third-party infrastructure, and the separate risk of Earn determine whether the app is appropriate for you.
