The UAE has launched another cybersecurity education initiative. The useful part is where this one starts: outside the classroom.
On September 19, the UAE Cyber Security Council and Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the CYBRANI Practical Training Initiative during GISEC Global 2026.
CYBRANI is designed to close the gap between university cybersecurity education and practical industry experience by exposing students to real-world challenges and organisations.
UAE university students studying cybersecurity, computing or related fields; universities; cybersecurity employers; and graduate recruiters.
Practical projects can give students evidence of applied skills before graduation and create stronger links between universities and cybersecurity employers.
The launch identifies seven academic institutions, eight government/industry partners and six training areas, but does not yet specify total cohort size, central application mechanics, selection criteria or programme-wide employment outcomes.
Named partners now need to open and deliver their practical training pathways, with Fortinet already describing an internship model under the CYBRANI umbrella.
Students should watch official Cyber Security Council and Ministry of Higher Education channels for application and eligibility details rather than assuming enrolment is already open.
Students gain practical exposure while employers and government bodies can help develop a stronger entry-level cybersecurity talent pipeline.

This is not simply a new course. CYBRANI connects students from seven UAE academic institutions with government bodies and cybersecurity companies for practical projects, mentoring and industry exposure across six cybersecurity disciplines.
Seven Universities and Academies Are in the First Phase
The first academic group is already defined: Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi Polytechnic, Rabdan Academy and the Higher Colleges of Technology.
On the industry and government side, the first phase includes Abu Dhabi Police, Mawaheb Talent Hub, CPX, Core42, ANSEN, Cyber50 Defense, Sia and Fortinet.
Those partners are expected to provide practical training, mentorship, supervision and exposure to working cybersecurity environments.
The Training Covers Six Areas
- Governance, Risk and Compliance
- Cybersecurity Operations
- Cyber Threat Intelligence
- Digital Forensics and Incident Response
- Secure Software Development
- Artificial Intelligence in Cybersecurity
That mix matters because “cybersecurity” is often treated as one job. In practice, defensive operations, incident response, software security, governance and threat intelligence require different skills and lead to different career paths.
Students Get a Certificate, but This Is Not a Job Guarantee
Students who successfully complete the programme will receive a Certificate of Completion jointly endorsed by the UAE Cyber Security Council and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
CYBRANI also promises practical projects, professional mentoring, networking and career-development pathways.
That should not be translated into guaranteed employment. The official launch does not promise every participant an internship or job after completion.
Why the Practical Layer Matters
Cybersecurity programmes can teach networking, threat models, cryptography and defensive techniques without showing students what those problems look like inside a live organisation.
CYBRANI is explicitly designed around that gap: academic knowledge on one side, real operational problems and employers on the other.
The timing also fits a broader shift in UAE cybersecurity. Dubai this week moved government security assurance toward a continuously updated model. A new DESC and Microsoft dashboard maps live security signals against Dubai’s Information Security Regulation instead of relying only on periodic assessments.
Infrastructure like that still needs people who understand what the signals mean, how to investigate them and what to do next. CYBRANI is an attempt to build that experience before students enter full-time roles.
One Partner Already Shows What This Can Look Like
Fortinet has separately announced an internship programme under CYBRANI. Its first phase will combine structured learning, hands-on labs and mentorship, with participants able to work toward the Fortinet NSE 4 FortiOS certification.
That is useful evidence of how the umbrella initiative may work in practice: different partners can provide specialised pathways rather than every student receiving one identical training programme.
What Is Still Missing
The September 19 launch gives far more structure than a normal programme announcement, but several practical details are still not public.
- Applications: whether students apply directly or through participating institutions.
- Scale: how many students will enter the first CYBRANI cohorts.
- Timing: the start dates and duration of each partner programme.
- Selection: the academic or technical criteria used to choose participants.
- Outcomes: how many participants later move into internships or cybersecurity roles.
The Bottom Line
CYBRANI is not interesting because the UAE has announced another cybersecurity programme. It is interesting because the first phase already connects seven academic institutions with named government and industry partners across six defined disciplines.
The next test is execution: how many students get access, how deep the practical work goes and whether those experiences translate into stronger early-career pathways.
