Etihad Rail Freight and AD Ports Group have opened a direct cargo service between Fujairah Terminals and the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi.
The obvious part is the train.
Cargo arriving at Fujairah Terminals can now move directly by rail to ICAD for inspection, customs clearance and release, moving part of the port process closer to Abu Dhabi industry.
Importers, exporters, manufacturers, distributors, freight forwarders and logistics operators moving cargo between the UAE east coast and Abu Dhabi.
ICAD's AECAD UN LOCODE allows cargo to be booked directly to the inland destination and clearance point, potentially reducing handoffs in the import chain.
The launch does not disclose customer pricing, guaranteed transit times or expected container volumes, so the commercial advantage versus trucking cannot yet be quantified.

This is more than a new freight route
Etihad Rail and AD Ports describe the service as an integrated inland logistics solution. In practice, it links an east-coast seaport to Abu Dhabi’s industrial heartland while moving part of the port process inland.
That distinction matters. A container does not simply arrive at Fujairah and then require a separate road movement and another logistics handoff before reaching an Abu Dhabi customer. The new model is designed to move it directly onto rail and complete inspection, clearance and release closer to warehouses, factories and distribution operations around ICAD.
The service is aimed at importers, exporters, manufacturers, distributors and logistics providers. The operators say it should reduce road movements, simplify handling and provide more predictable high-volume cargo flows.
Why the AECAD code matters
A UN LOCODE is a standard location code used in international trade and transport systems. Giving ICAD the code AECAD makes the inland site a recognised logistics location rather than merely the place where a domestic rail journey ends.
That allows cargo to be booked to ICAD as its destination and clearance point. It is a small-looking administrative change with a practical effect: the inland terminal becomes part of the international shipping workflow.
For businesses in Abu Dhabi, that can move customs and inspection activity closer to the point where the goods are actually needed.
The corridor has been building for years
This did not appear from nowhere.
Etihad Rail connected the ICAD freight terminal to the national network in 2022. In April 2026, the company and Al Masaood Automobiles completed the first rail movement of finished passenger vehicles for a UAE automotive dealership, moving Nissan vehicles from Fujairah to the ICAD dry port.
Today’s announcement turns that corridor into a broader integrated service rather than a one-off automotive movement.
That is also why the development is more useful than another rail-construction milestone. The infrastructure is now being packaged into a commercial logistics product with customs, cargo handling and destination booking attached.
What businesses should watch next
The announcement does not publish customer pricing, container volumes, transit times or a quantified comparison with trucking. Those are the numbers that will determine how quickly businesses shift cargo onto the route.
Etihad Rail and AD Ports say rail can reduce congestion and carbon emissions compared with long-haul trucking, while improving scalability for high-volume cargo. Those advantages are plausible, but the commercial test will be whether the full door-to-door service is cheaper, faster or more predictable for individual shippers.

The bottom line
The new Fujairah–ICAD service is not simply a train carrying containers across the UAE.
Its useful feature is that ICAD is becoming an inland extension of the port process. Cargo can arrive through Fujairah, travel by rail into Abu Dhabi’s industrial zone, and be inspected, cleared and released there.
If businesses adopt it at scale, the competitive advantage will come from removing handoffs — not from the novelty of moving a box by rail.
