Every Dubai resident will eventually need GDRFA.
It does not matter how long you have lived here. At some point your visa renewal, your dependant’s residency, a fine on your record, or a Golden Visa application will require you to deal with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.
In 2026, three significant rule changes affect how GDRFA processes visa renewals and Golden Visa applications. Most residents do not know about them. We will cover them clearly.
But first, the app itself.
GDRFA vs ICA — The Confusion That Trips Up New Residents
This is the most important thing to understand before touching any immigration service in Dubai.
GDRFA is a Dubai emirate-level authority. It handles everything related to how you legally exist in Dubai — visas, residency permits, entry permits, fines, establishment cards, domestic worker permits, and Golden Visa appointments.
ICA is the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security. It operates at the national UAE level. It handles Emirates ID issuance and federal immigration policy.
If you live in Dubai and have a problem with your visa or your dependant’s residency, GDRFA is the authority. Not your typing centre. Not your employer’s HR team. GDRFA.
If you live in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or another emirate, most services go through ICA directly rather than a local GDRFA equivalent.
The GDRFA DXB app is for Dubai residents only. If you are in another emirate and trying to use this app for immigration services, you are in the wrong place. Use the ICP app instead.
Three 2026 Rule Changes You Need to Know
These changes happened in late 2025 and early 2026. The original version of this article did not cover them. They affect a large number of Dubai residents.
Rule Change 1: Traffic fines are now linked to visa renewal. GDRFA linked immigration services with Dubai Police in late 2025. When you apply to renew your residency visa, the system now checks for outstanding traffic fines. You must clear all pending fines before your visa renewal can be processed. Check your fine status in advance.
Rule Change 2: The 10-day visa grace period was officially removed as of April 2026. Previously, when a UAE visit visa expired, there was a 10-day grace period before overstay fines began. That grace period no longer exists. Overstay fines of AED 50 per day now begin immediately after expiry. If you are sponsoring visitors or managing entry permits, this is critical to track.
Rule Change 3: Golden Visa property applications changed significantly in February 2026. The requirement to have paid at least 50% upfront on an off-plan property was removed. Now, as long as the DLD-certified valuation of the property reaches AED 2 million, you can qualify regardless of how much you have paid so far. The AED 2 million minimum value itself has not changed.
What the GDRFA DXB App Actually Does
The app is available on iOS and Android. You can log in with UAE Pass or create a separate GDRFA account. Use UAE Pass. It pre-fills your details and links your file automatically.

How to Check Your Visa Status — Step by Step
This is the most-used feature of the app. Here is exactly how to do it.
- Open the GDRFA DXB app and log in with UAE Pass.
- Select ‘Visa Status Inquiry’ from the main menu.
- Enter the passport number of the person you are checking.
- Select their nationality from the dropdown.
- Enter their date of birth.
- The result shows the current visa status, the visa type, the entry date, and the expiry date.
You can check your own visa, your spouse’s, your children’s, and any other person you are sponsoring. You can also check visitors whose entry permit you have arranged, to confirm the permit was processed correctly before they travel.
If the status shows ‘Expired’ for a residency visa you believe should still be valid, do not panic first. Check whether your Emirates ID is still active. Sometimes the visa and ID renewal cycles are slightly misaligned and the system takes a few days to update after renewal payments are processed.
How to Find Your GDRFA Unified Number
Your Unified Number is your GDRFA identifier. You will need it for almost every formal GDRFA service request. Many residents do not know it until they need it urgently.
Find it in the app by going to ‘Unified Number Inquiry.’ Enter your Emirates ID number and your date of birth. The number is also printed on your UAE residency visa stamp in your passport, usually labelled as ‘ID No.’
Write it down somewhere accessible. You will need it more than once.
Managing Your Dependants
If you sponsor family members, the dependant management section of the app is one of the most useful things GDRFA has built.
You can see every active entry permit and residency visa under your sponsorship in one screen. You can see the expiry date of each one. You get advance notice before any dependant’s visa expires.
Given the removal of the 10-day grace period in April 2026, tracking dependant visa expiry dates is more important than it has ever been. A dependant who overstays by even one day now incurs fines from day one.
Set calendar reminders 30 days before any dependant visa expires. That gives you enough time to handle the renewal without rushing.
Golden Visa Through GDRFA in 2026
GDRFA handles Golden Visa applications for Dubai residents. The process has been simplified in 2026 through a new unified digital platform.
What changed for property-based Golden Visas
The February 2026 change removed the requirement to have paid 50% upfront on an off-plan property. If your property has a DLD-certified valuation of AED 2 million or more, you now qualify regardless of what you have paid so far. This opens the Golden Visa to a much wider group of off-plan buyers.
The AED 2 million minimum property value has not changed. That threshold remains.
What changed for other Golden Visa categories
New categories were added in 2025 and have been active through 2026. Content creators, podcasters, and visual artists are now eligible through Dubai’s Creators HQ programme. E-sports professionals and game developers have their own eligibility track. Nurses with 15 or more years at Dubai Health gained eligibility. Educators with strong tenure now qualify in specific categories.
Waqf contributors, meaning people donating to approved Islamic charitable endowments, can now qualify through an agreement between GDRFA and the Endowments and Minors Affairs Foundation.
The appointment process
Once your application is ready, you book a biometric and document verification appointment through the GDRFA app. After payment, the system auto-assigns you a fingerprint appointment at a GDRFA centre.
GDRFA aims to process files with no errors within five working days. The old process typically took three to six weeks. Book your appointment as early as possible because slots fill quickly.
Visa Renewal and the Fine Link — What to Do Before You Apply
The new traffic fine link means you need to do one thing before starting any visa renewal.
Check your fine status. Open the GDRFA app, go to Fine Inquiry, and confirm there are no outstanding fines on your record. Then check your Dubai Police app or the RTA app for any traffic fines.
If there are outstanding fines, pay them first. Then start your visa renewal. The system will block your renewal until fines are cleared. Discovering this on the day your visa needs to be renewed is stressful and avoidable.
What the App Cannot Do — Services That Still Require In-Person Visits
The GDRFA app has expanded significantly but it does not replace in-person visits for everything. These services still require you to go to an Amer centre or GDRFA office in most cases.
- Biometric fingerprint registration for new visa applications
- Complex visa cases involving previous overstay records, legal disputes, or special circumstances
- Absconding reports for domestic workers
- Original document submission for certain visa categories
- Establishment card applications for new businesses
For these services, Amer centres are GDRFA-authorised typing and service centres located across Dubai. They can handle most of the in-person requirements on your behalf. Find the nearest one at gdrfad.gov.ae.
Common Mistakes Dubai Residents Make With GDRFA
These are the errors that cost people money and time every year.
- Not checking traffic fines before a visa renewal appointment. The system will block you. Sort fines first.
- Assuming the 10-day grace period still exists for visitors’ entry permits. It does not, as of April 2026. Overstay fines begin on day one after expiry.
- Contacting a typing centre first for every issue. Many queries can be resolved directly through the app or the GDRFA helpline at 800 5111. Typing centres charge fees for services you can handle yourself.
- Not knowing your Unified Number before you need it urgently. Get it now from the app and write it down.
- Waiting until a visa is about to expire before starting the renewal. Some renewals require pre-approval steps that take time. Start at least three weeks before expiry.
