Careem App Review 2026: Is the UAE Super App Still Worth Using or Has It Spread Itself Too Thin?

Careem App Review 2026: Is the UAE Super App Still Worth Using or Has It Spread Itself Too Thin?

Careem started as a ride-hailing app in Dubai in 2012. Today it tries to be everything.

Rides. Food delivery. Groceries. Bill payments. Money transfers. Careem Pay. Careem Bike. Careem Bus. The app has grown into one of the most ambitious super app projects in the Middle East.

Ambitious is not the same as excellent. We tested every major feature for a month. Here is what actually works and what Careem should probably stop pretending is good.

Rides: Still the Core and Still Strong

Careem’s original product remains its strongest. Ride availability in Dubai is excellent. The experience of booking, tracking, and completing a Careem ride is smooth and reliable.

In terms of pricing, Careem and Uber are now largely comparable in Dubai for standard rides. During surge pricing, Careem tends to surge slightly less aggressively than Uber in our experience, though this varies by area and time.

Careem Captain driver quality varies. The rating system works as a feedback mechanism but does not always ensure consistency. This is an industry-wide problem, not specific to Careem.

Rides verdict:  Strong. Reliable. Use it daily.

Careem Pay: The Most Underused Feature in the App

Careem Pay is a mobile wallet that deserves more attention than it gets.

You can top up with a UAE bank card and use Careem Pay to pay for rides, food delivery, and bill payments within the app. No need to enter card details for every transaction.

Careem Pay also allows person-to-person transfers to other Careem users. For splitting restaurant bills or ride costs between friends, this is faster than bank transfers.

The limitation: Careem Pay is not widely accepted outside the Careem ecosystem. You cannot use it at a physical store or on external websites. The wallet works well within the app but has limited utility beyond it.

Careem Pay verdict:  Good within the Careem ecosystem. Limited value outside it.

Careem Food: The Weakest Link

We tested Careem Food across 8 orders over the month. The results were mixed in a way that makes it hard to recommend as a primary food delivery choice.

Delivery times consistently ran longer than estimates. Three of eight orders arrived beyond the upper end of the estimated window. Two arrived at room temperature. One order had a missing item that took 4 days and 3 support contacts to resolve.

Careem Food’s strength is price, specifically the Meals:ON feature that offers full meals for AED 29 or less. For budget-conscious orders where temperature and timing are not the priority, it works. For anything where you care about the food being hot, use Talabat or Deliveroo.

Careem Food verdict:  Use for budget meals and Meals:ON deals only. Not for premium orders.

Careem Now (Grocery): Getting Better

Careem Now for grocery delivery has improved noticeably in the past 12 months. Coverage in major Dubai communities is good. Delivery times for essentials are generally 20 to 30 minutes.

Product selection is narrower than Noon Mart or a dedicated grocery delivery service. For a top-up shop of 10 to 20 items, Careem Now is convenient. For a full weekly grocery run, the selection gaps will frustrate you.

Careem Now verdict:  Good for quick top-ups. Not for full grocery shops.

Bills and Payments

DEWA bill payment through Careem Pay works. Etisalat bill payment works. The selection of supported billers is narrower than DubaiNow but covers the main utilities most residents need.

The advantage of paying through Careem is the Careem rewards integration. Bill payments earn Careem points that can be used for ride credits. Not a compelling enough reason to switch from DubaiNow if you are already set up there, but a useful bonus if Careem is already your primary app.

The Honest Overall Verdict

Careem in 2026 is an excellent ride-hailing app that has added competent but uneven adjacent features.

The rides are strong. Careem Pay is useful within the ecosystem. Careem Now is decent for quick grocery runs. Careem Food is the weakest feature and should be used selectively.

Is it a super app? Not yet in the way WeChat or Grab are super apps. It is a ride app with useful extras. That is still worth having on your phone.
