OpenAI Raised $122B. The Fine Print Is “Committed Capital”

OpenAI’s March 2026 funding round was enormous. But the company’s own wording matters: $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation. That is not the same as $122 billion of cash arriving on one day.

OpenAI’s March 2026 funding round was enormous. But one phrase in the company’s announcement matters more than the headline number.

On March 31, OpenAI said it had closed a round with $122 billion in committed capital at a $852 billion post-money valuation.

Committed capital is not the same thing as saying $122 billion of cash landed in OpenAI’s bank account that day. It describes the capital investors committed through the financing round. The valuation is also not cash. It is the value assigned to the company after the financing.

Who backed the round?

OpenAI said the round was anchored by Amazon, NVIDIA and SoftBank, with continued participation from Microsoft. SoftBank co-led the round alongside a16z, D. E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates.

The company also said more than $3 billion came from individual investors through bank channels. Separately, OpenAI expanded a revolving credit facility to about $4.7 billion and said that facility remained undrawn when the round closed.

The more useful number is compute

The funding announcement was really an infrastructure announcement. OpenAI said durable access to compute had become a strategic advantage and described a broader supplier strategy spanning Microsoft, Oracle, AWS, CoreWeave and Google Cloud, plus chips from NVIDIA, AMD, AWS Trainium, Cerebras and OpenAI’s own Broadcom partnership.

That is the Robius angle. The AI race is not only a model race. It is also a race for data centers, power, chips, cloud capacity and the financing required to keep all of that running.

What the $852B valuation does not prove

A private-market valuation does not prove profitability, future returns or that every dollar of committed capital has already been deployed. OpenAI also reported strong operating metrics in the same announcement, including more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users and about $2 billion in monthly revenue. Those figures were company-reported.

So the clean reading is: investors committed a historic amount of capital to OpenAI at a very high valuation, largely because advanced AI now requires infrastructure at extraordinary scale. The number is real. The headline still needs the fine print.
