Scam or Legit?

He Said He Was an Engineer in Doha. He Was Never Real

The person on the other side of a romance scam may look more convincing than the old warning signs prepare you for.

Profile photos can be generated. Voice can be cloned. Messages can be personalised at scale. But the basic fraud pattern has not changed: build trust first, introduce a financial opportunity later, and move the victim toward a platform or account controlled by the criminals.

The relationship is part of the investment scam

The FBI describes cryptocurrency investment fraud — often called “pig butchering” — as a confidence-based scam. Criminals develop a friendship or relationship online, then introduce a fake investment opportunity and encourage progressively larger deposits. The apparent profits are not real, and withdrawals eventually fail.

Operation Level Up is the FBI’s programme for identifying and warning people it believes are actively being targeted by this type of fraud.

Dubai was part of a major 2026 crackdown

On 29 April 2026, Dubai Police announced that it had led a joint operation with the FBI and Chinese police against transnational fraud networks. The operation resulted in 276 arrests and the dismantling of nine fraud centres linked to high-yield investment scams, “pig butchering” and virtual-currency fraud.

Some later secondary reports linked more than $701 million in restrained or seized cryptocurrency to the wider enforcement action. The Dubai Police announcement reported by Gulf News and The National confirmed the arrests and nine centres; it did not publish that $701 million figure in the announcement itself.

AI changes scale, not the core test

A convincing photo or voice note is weaker evidence than it used to be. The useful checks are behavioural.

Be wary when an online relationship becomes an investment pitch, especially when the other person wants you to use a specific trading platform, move to an encrypted chat, keep the opportunity secret, or keep depositing to unlock withdrawals.

What still works

Do not send money to an investment introduced through a new online relationship. Search the platform and legal entity independently. Verify any claimed licence through the regulator’s own register. If withdrawal requires another “tax”, “unlock” or “verification” payment, stop sending funds.

If you suspect a scam, preserve the messages, wallet addresses, transaction records and platform URLs before accounts disappear.

The bottom line

The most important warning sign is not whether the person’s face looks real. It is the moment the relationship becomes a channel for moving your money.

AI can make the story more believable. It does not change the safest response to an unsolicited investment pitch.
