Wio looks like a fintech app. Legally, it is a bank.
Wio Bank PJSC is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE as a commercial bank. It does not sit on top of another bank’s license. It is the licensed institution itself.
That matters. But it does not answer the next question. Is Wio the right bank for you? The answer depends on whether you are a freelancer, a small business, a salary earner, or someone who still needs branches and cash services.
| T H E R O B I U S V E R D I C T LEGIT: Wio Bank PJSC is a genuine UAE commercial bank regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE. Its strongest fit is digital-first customers, freelancers, creators, and SMEs. The trade-off is simple. You get a broad digital product set and fast onboarding. You give up the branch network and cash-first experience of a traditional bank. |
Wio Is Not Just an App With a Banking Partner
This is the first thing to get right.
Wio’s audited 2025 financial statements say the bank was incorporated in Abu Dhabi in February 2022. They also state that the Central Bank licenses Wio as a commercial bank. Its main business is digital banking, including loans and other commercial banking services.
That is different from a wallet or fintech app that depends on another bank to hold customer accounts. With Wio, the bank named in the app is the bank itself.
The old version of this article also had the shareholder list wrong. Wio launched with ADQ and Alpha Dhabi holding a combined 65% stake. e& held 25%. First Abu Dhabi Bank held 10%. ADIB and AD Ports were not the founding shareholders listed in the launch announcement.
The Numbers Are No Longer Startup-Sized
Wio is young. It is not small.
Its audited 2025 financial statements reported about AED 61.1 billion in total assets. Customer deposits were about AED 57.3 billion. Profit after tax was AED 621.7 million.
Those numbers do not tell you whether the app is pleasant to use. They do show that Wio is now operating at real bank scale.
Wio also says more than 200,000 people have joined Wio Personal. On the business side, the bank says more than 130,000 UAE businesses use Wio Business. Those user counts are company-reported, not independently audited figures.
The Old Review Is Already Outdated
This page needed more than a light edit. Wio’s product changed quickly.
The old article said Wio did not offer business loans, overdrafts, or credit lines in the way traditional banks do. That is no longer accurate.
Wio Business now lists business credit cards, lines of credit, business loans, and supply-chain finance. A current DET offer page also promotes credit lines up to AED 250,000 and business loans up to AED 3 million, subject to approval and terms.
Wio Personal has expanded too. It now includes credit cards, personal loans, investing, family banking, and savings products. This is no longer a narrow SME banking app.
Wio Business: Still the Strongest Part of the Product
Wio’s business account is still where the digital model makes the most sense.
The bank says onboarding is fully digital and can be completed in about three working days. The app includes invoicing, payment links, payroll tools, team access, virtual cards, savings, and multi-currency accounts.
Current Wio Business pricing lists two main plans. Essential costs AED 99 per month. Grow costs AED 249 per month. Essential includes 10 free local transfers each month and two users. Grow includes unlimited free local transfers and up to 10 users.
International SWIFT pricing also differs. Essential currently lists AED 52.50 per SWIFT transfer. Grow lists AED 26.25.
This is important because ‘digital bank’ does not mean ‘free bank.’ The account can still be good value. You should compare the monthly plan and transfer fees with the way your business actually moves money.
Freelancers and Creators: Better Than the Old Article Explained
The old page described a freelancer account as if any MOHRE freelance permit automatically replaced every other business document. That was too broad.
Wio now has a specific Wio Creators offer. It is aimed at freelancers, creators, and independent professionals. Wio says new customers can qualify with a valid freelance permit or a trade license in an eligible creative activity.
The current offer includes 12 months without the subscription fee, no minimum balance, 10 free local transfers per month, multi-currency accounts, invoicing tools, and virtual cards. Promotional terms can change, so check the live offer before applying.

Wio Personal Is Much Broader Now
Wio Personal used to be easy to describe: a digital account with cards, transfers, and savings. That description is now too small.
The current app covers everyday banking, savings, salary transfer, credit, family accounts, and investing. Wio says customers can invest from USD 1 and access more than 3,000 US and UAE stocks, shares, fractional shares, and ETFs through its investing service.
Wio also markets savings rates up to 6% per year on certain fixed saving spaces linked to Salary or Family plans. The conditions matter. Rates can change. Read the current Key Facts Statement and pricing before moving a large balance for one headline rate.
The same rule applies to credit. Wio now advertises personal loans and credit-card features. That makes the app more useful. It also means customers should read the borrowing terms with the same care they would at any other bank.
What Wio Still Does Differently
The main advantage is not that Wio has invented banking. It is that many normal banking tasks are designed around the app first.
Business owners can issue invoices, create payment links, give team members different permissions, manage cards, and handle payroll without starting at a branch.
The bank also supports accounts in several currencies. Its business payment page currently lists USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, and CHF alongside AED. Wio advertises a fixed AED-to-USD rate of 3.673 for business customers.
For digital businesses, that can remove a lot of friction.
Wio is also pushing banking into other SME platforms. Its Geidea partnership puts Wio banking and financing in front of merchants using Geidea payment tools.
Where the Trade-Off Still Shows
Wio is fully digital. That is the feature and the limitation.
If you want a branch manager, a nearby teller, or a traditional cash-heavy relationship, another bank may fit better. Wio’s terms describe it as a fully digital bank without physical branches.
Cash is possible through partner infrastructure, but it is not the center of the product. Wio Business currently says cash deposits at Lulu Exchange cost AED 10.50 under its published fee schedule. Cash deposits and withdrawals at supported FAB ATMs are listed as free.
A restaurant or retailer handling a lot of notes and coins may still prefer a traditional bank as the main operating account. A consultant sending invoices and receiving transfers may barely notice the lack of branches.
The same is true for complex corporate banking. Wio has added more financing. That does not mean it now replaces every trade-finance, treasury, relationship-banking, or large-enterprise service offered by the biggest UAE banks.
Do Not Repeat the ‘We Opened It in 8 Minutes’ Claim Without Proof
The old Robius article said, ‘We opened an account in 8 minutes.’
That is a strong first-person testing claim. We should keep it only if Robius has the account-opening records and notes to support it.
Without that evidence, the safer fact is Wio’s own current claim. Wio Personal says accounts can be opened digitally in minutes. Wio Business says business onboarding can take around three working days.
Those are company claims. They are clear enough without pretending we ran a test we cannot document.
What Happens If You Have a Banking Complaint?
This is where being a licensed bank matters more than the app design.
Wio publishes direct support and complaint channels. If the problem is not resolved, customers of UAE licensed financial institutions can use Sanadak, the UAE’s independent financial complaint resolution unit.
Sanadak normally expects you to complain to the bank first. Its current eligibility check asks whether 15 calendar days have passed without a satisfactory written response.
That does not mean every complaint will go your way. It does mean there is a formal external complaint route. That is very different from dealing with an offshore app with no UAE banking license.
Who Wio Makes the Most Sense For
| Customer | Fit | Why |
| Freelancer / creator | Strong | Digital onboarding, creator offer, invoices, multi-currency tools |
| Small digital business | Strong | Team access, payments, payroll, cards, financing |
| Salary earner | Good | Savings, salary plan, credit, family banking, investing |
| Cash-heavy business | Mixed | Digital model is less convenient for frequent cash handling |
| Large company with complex treasury needs | Mixed | Product is growing, but traditional corporate banks remain deeper |
For freelancers, the bank also fits naturally into the UAE freelancer tools stack. Banking is only one part. You still need invoicing, records, and the right legal setup.
For remote workers, our UAE remote-worker tech stack covers the wider setup.
The Bottom Line
Wio is not a fintech pretending to be a bank. It is a real UAE bank with a commercial banking license.
The stronger question is whether its digital-first model fits your money.
For freelancers, creators, and many SMEs, the answer may be yes. The app covers much more than it did at launch. Business credit, personal loans, investing, family banking, payroll, and multi-currency tools are now part of the picture.
For customers who depend on branches, cash handling, or complex corporate banking, the answer may be different.
Do not choose Wio because it looks modern. Do not reject it because it has no branches. Compare the actual plan, fees, products, and support model with the way you bank.
That is the part that matters.
