GDRFA DXB app guide 2026
Every Dubai resident eventually needs GDRFA. It is the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs — the authority that controls your visa, your dependants’ residency, your fine record, and your Smart Gate access. Here is what the app actually does, and what it does not tell you.
What GDRFA Is and Why Every Resident Needs to Know It
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai is the emirate-level immigration authority responsible for everything related to how you and anyone you sponsor legally exist in Dubai. Visas, residency permits, entry permits for visiting family, fine records, establishment cards for business owners, domestic worker permits, absconding reports, Smart Gate registration, and Golden Visa appointments all flow through GDRFA.

The critical distinction most new residents miss: GDRFA Dubai is a separate authority from ICA (the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security). ICA operates at the federal level and governs Emirates ID issuance and federal immigration policy. GDRFA executes Dubai’s local immigration services under that federal framework. If you are in Dubai, your visa and residency processes go through GDRFA. If you are in Abu Dhabi or another emirate, they go through ICA directly.
| If you live in Dubai and your visa, your dependant’s residency, or your establishment card has an issue — GDRFA is the authority. Not the typing centre. Not the employer. GDRFA. |

How to Check Your Visa Status — Step by Step
This is the single most searched GDRFA task and the one most likely to cause confusion because there are multiple valid methods that produce slightly different results.
- Method 1 — GDRFA website (gdrfad.gov.ae): Go directly to the official site. Under ‘Services’, select ‘Visa Status Inquiry’. Enter passport number, passport expiry date, nationality, and date of birth. Complete the CAPTCHA. This works for Dubai-issued visas and produces results in under 30 seconds. Free and no login required.
- Method 2 — GDRFA DXB App: Download the app, log in with your GDRFA Unified ID or Emirates ID, and navigate to Visa Services. The app also allows you to track active applications, which the website does not show in the same format.
- Method 3 — DubaiNow app: If you already use DubaiNow, GDRFA visa inquiry is accessible within the Residency Services section. This is the quickest path for existing DubaiNow users.
- Method 4 — ICA Smart Services (ica.gov.ae): For federal-level checks or if you are in a different emirate, the ICA platform shows Emirates ID validity and residency status across all emirates, not just Dubai.
Important: If your visa was issued by an Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or other non-Dubai authority, the GDRFA website and app will not show it. Use the ICA platform for non-Dubai visas.
What Residents Get Wrong About GDRFA Fines
GDRFA fines are separate from Dubai Police traffic fines. A common mistake is paying a traffic fine through DubaiNow or the Dubai Police app and assuming all outstanding fines are cleared. GDRFA fines, which can arise from visa overstays, absconding reports, expired establishment cards, or residency violations sit in a completely separate system and must be checked and paid through GDRFA channels specifically.
The fine inquiry function in the GDRFA app and on gdrfad.gov.ae covers both personal fines and fines related to anyone under your sponsorship. Family sponsors are liable for overstay fines accrued by sponsored dependants. Business owners are liable for fines related to their establishment cards and sponsored employees. These do not appear in DubaiNow‘s fine payment section.
The Golden Visa Appointment Process — What the App Tells You and What It Does Not
The GDRFA DXB app allows Golden Visa applicants to schedule an appointment for document verification at GDRFA offices. This is the physical step required after initial Golden Visa eligibility is confirmed — biometric data, original documents, and Emirates ID registration all happen at this appointment.
What the app does not clearly communicate: appointment availability is genuinely limited, particularly for in-demand slots. The app shows available dates and times but does not indicate queue depth or expected wait. Applicants who miss their appointment slot must rebook through the app, and popular time slots can have multi-week waits. Planning the appointment early before the residency deadline is advisable.
What Needs to Improve
- Clearer GDRFA vs ICA jurisdiction guidance. The app should immediately surface whether a user’s visa is GDRFA-managed or ICA-managed and redirect appropriately rather than showing ‘not found’ for non-Dubai visas.
- Fine type explanation. When a fine appears, the app shows the amount but not always the reason or the underlying incident. Understanding why a fine exists should not require a phone call to GDRFA.
- Proactive visa expiry alerts. Push notifications for visas approaching expiry for both the resident and their sponsored dependants would prevent the overstay situations that generate the fines the app then displays.
- English and Arabic parity. Several sections of the app and portal are more complete in Arabic than in English, creating a two-tier experience for the majority non-Arabic-speaking resident population.
| GDRFA DXB verdict: The authoritative source for Dubai immigration status and fine records. Use it alongside DubaiNow, not instead of it. The visa status check and dependant management functions are genuinely useful. The fine categorisation and cross-authority guidance need significant improvement. |
